An Exclusive Interview with a Rising Star Who’s Ready to Show His Range
As comedian-turned-actor Bobby Ortiz Jr. steps into his first feature film role in Jay Anthony’s Next Lifetime, he’s bringing more than just laughs. He’s bringing depth, heart, and a story that hits close to home. In this exclusive interview, Bobby opens up about what drew him to the project, how he’s balancing comedy with drama, and what fans can expect from this exciting next chapter.
What pulled you toward Next Lifetime?
BOBBY ORTIZ JR.:
I was drawn to the script because it shows an element of realness between the lead characters. I’ve lived something similar to it. When a story hits close to home, you feel it differently—and I knew I could bring something authentic to it.
You’re known for your comedy, but this isn’t a comedy. What kind of energy are you bringing to the project?
BOBBY:
I’m bringing a swagger to the film that’s like no other. A level of determination to bring each scene to life—and I’m bringing something that’s super relatable. There’s power in being the person who can lighten a heavy moment without stealing the moment.

Why did this feel like the right project for where you are in your career?
BOBBY:
This role lets me be me… but also stretch beyond me. On stage, people know me as Bobby the comic. In this film, I’m stepping into a character that doesn’t fully resemble who I am off stage. That duality is what made it feel like a “now” moment.
How are you adjusting your tone for a dramatic role?
BOBBY:
People always say the funniest folks carry the most trauma. I get that. There’s truth in my comedy. And now I get to bring that same truth to a character—use my own pain to bring life to the lines. I can’t wait for people to see that side.
What does comedy unlock in a story like Next Lifetime?
BOBBY:
It adds a lighthearted layer to a serious story. Every great dramatic film has that one character that makes the audience breathe, laugh, or just relax for a second. That’s who I get to be. I’m the heartbeat between the heavy beats.
Is your approach different from how you perform on stage?
BOBBY:
Absolutely. On stage, you feel the energy of the crowd. You adjust in real-time. But on camera? You have to imagine they’re watching and lock in. There’s a stillness to screen work that makes every gesture matter. It’s a new challenge—and I’m embracing it.

What excites you most about working with this cast and crew?
BOBBY:
We all come from different walks of life, but we’re coming together for one purpose: to make something great. To build trust, bring the best out of one another, and tell a story that matters. That excites me.
As the comic relief, how do you avoid being a distraction?
BOBBY:
Don’t force it. That’s the key. Let the comedy breathe naturally. Find my openings like a smart boxer—don’t swing unless it’s the right time. I’m not here to be the loudest in the room. I’m here to land.
What kind of chemistry are you hoping to build on set?
BOBBY:
I’m bringing that football team mentality. Everybody has to play their position, but we win together. If we’re all locked in, moving as one, this film’s gonna hit hard and feel real.
This is your first film. What does that mean to you?
BOBBY:
It means the world. For Jay Anthony to believe in me and give me this opportunity? That’s something I don’t take lightly. I’m locked in. Grateful and ready.

If you had to describe the vibe of this project in one word, what would it be?
BOBBY:
Sensational. (Future voice)
Final question: What can your comedy fans expect to see from you in Next Lifetime?
BOBBY:
A side of me they’ve never seen before. I’m a thespian at heart, and this film shows my range. I hope they love this side of me like they love the funny guy on stage—because this side is just as real.
In Next Lifetime, Bobby Ortiz Jr. isn’t just telling jokes—he’s telling truths. And with his debut performance, he’s proving that comedy may be where he started, but it’s only one piece of a much bigger story.
